Look, I’m going to tell you the real reason I bought these two bottles of wine.
I liked the labels. Yes, clean, simple, elegant labels.
There, I’ve said it.
I’m not the first person to buy a wine based on the look of the label, and I won’t be the last.
The good news is that both of these wines were delicious.
Lammershoek Roulette, a red blend with 62% Syrah, is fresh tasting with a mild spicy and peppery taste.
The Lammershoek Roulette Blanc is a refreshing zingy wine, with hints of green apples and citrus, and is a blend of bush vine Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.
This vineyard is in the process of converting to sustainable and organic farming. They have a healthy export business to Austria, Switzerland and Canada.
These wines come from the Swartland region.
The more wines I taste from the Swartland the more I’m developing a fondness for them.
Maybe it’s because I find them well structured and straightforward. Maybe it’s the consistency of the whites and the big boned honesty of the reds. Maybe I just like the taste.
I think it’s time for Neil Pendock to explain why someone like me, who is no expert in wine tasting, is gravitating more and more to the wines of this region.
One last thing, there is a lovely story behind the name for these wines.
During lambing season the sheep used to huddle in the woods surrounding the farms for protection from the eagles that used to prey on them. The eagles were called Lammervanger (which I presume means lamb hunter) and the wines are now called Lammershoek, lambs corner.
A nice glass of Roulette red is no mutton dressed as lamb though.
Prices start at about R90.
Thanks to Mike Walters of the De Langenhof Guesthouse for use of the Swartland photograph.

I agree, the label is just as important ‘cos if the label is poor, it means even less thought may have gone into the production of the wine, that being said I’ve drunk some pretty good wine with second rate labels!
Yip, just love the story behind their label but most of all, wonderful wines. Did you taste their Straw Wine – desert wine made from naturally dried grapes? Not only wine – they make a great olive oil – if I am correct, they have only been making olive oil for two years.
Enjoying a glass of Lammershoek Aprils Kloof White at the moment! Delicious wines indeed!
I think a lot of people buy their wines based on the look of the lable. Well done for admitting it.
