Pinot Noir from Paul Cluver.

Roast Lemon and Garlic Chicken. Potatoes, roasted in goose fat, golden and crispy on the outside. Lightly steamed asparagus and some caramelised onions with roast parsnip.

Food sorted, now what to drink? Nothing too heavy please. No tannic Cabernet Sauvignons or Pinotages bursting out of the bottle. Let’s play safe and go for a light, soft, unintimidating wine.

A Paul Cluver 2008 Pinot Noir is recommended. I go for it, and remind myself that I don’t know very much about the Elgin region. It’s on the way to Hermanus, cool sea breezes, there’s a new Grand Daddy Airstream Trailer Park just opened. Lots of outdoor adventure sports.

Well what better way to start exploring a region than to drink the wine.

The main course is served up, and the chicken is wonderful. It’s one of these Free Range ones from Chubby Chicks, reared in Stellenbosch and delivered to my door. The wine is poured.

Beautiful light red liquid. Cherry on the nose, a hint of smokiness. It goes wonderfully with the food.

The bottle empties in no time, my guests quietly sipping and eating.

I should have bought two.
