I love bubbly, sparkling wine or as the French call it, champagne. I’ve tasted some that have done nothing for me, and some I have positively disliked.
For the wine of the week this week I decided to highlight one of my favourite bubblies.
It’s Graham Beck’s Brut, Non Vintage.
I’ve drunk my fair share of bubbly everywhere. From Spanish Cava to the best the French have to offer and my conclusion is that the South African products are amongst the best of them.
I particularly like Graham Beck’s NV Brut. It’s a good honest sparkly. I like the yeasty biscuit notes and the creamy overtones. Peter “Bubbles” Ferriera makes it up in his Robertson cellars from a blend of chardonnay and pinot noir grapes.
Nelson Mandela toasted his inauguration with it in 1994 and Barack Obama, after tasting a couple of glasses in a Chicago restaurant with his wife Michelle, decided to order it for his toast the night he became president of the USA. Good enough for them, it’s good enough for me and you.
COMPETITION. And to celebrate this weekend, and why not?, we are giving away 6 bottles of Graham Beck Brut
All you have to do is to tell us why you deserve a bottle. It’s that simple.
Entries to clare@spill.co.za
The best six entries will receive a bottle, hand delivered.
Closing time for entries is 6pm, Monday evening.
Graham Beck Brut NV.R97.99.
