Wine of the Week. Bartinney Cabernet Sauvignon 2009.

Bartinney Cabernet Sauvignon 2009bottle 111x300 Wine of the Week. Bartinney Cabernet Sauvignon 2009.

Bartiney 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Made from grapes grown at 600m.

Therese de Beer, the winemaker, believes in so little intervention in the “grapes to bottle” process that she almost guiltily describes herself as a lazy winemaker.

I’ll tell you what she does have though; the woman’s touch. There’s a softness and elegance to this Cabernet that you’d swear a whoosh of Merlot has been added. It is full bodied, but it has been softened by plum and cassis with a hint of mint. You can also detect a little roast coffee bean from the oak.

It’s one of the few young Cabernet Sauvignons that I have been able to quaff recently without gagging on the tannins.

It costs R130 at the cellar door and online, and it’s currently going into distribution.
