Baboons prefer Pinot Noir.

Baboons in vineyard Baboons prefer Pinot Noir.

Cheeky monkey......a baboon checks out this years Pinot Noir crop.

Now I haveĀ a problem with baboons.

I used to be sympathetic to their cause, but now they are messing with me. They are plundering the Pinot Noir crop wholesale.

This is my favourite wine, and I won’t stand for it.

But seriously, it appears that the poor animals are resorting to foraging in the ripening vines as their traditional areas for scavenging have been decimated by wildfires and habitat decline.

And they are choosy. They will only eat the sweet bunches, throwing away the sour unripened ones.

2010 has been a bad year for vineyard invasions, because of the fires last year.

They also have learned the knack of getting drunk, by eating bunches of discarded fermenting grapes.

Well done to the Mail and Guardian for this juicy story – www.mg.co.za/article/2010-03-24-baboons-prefer-pinot-noir
