The view from inside the main building at Waterkloof never fails to impress.
10 meter high glass walls frame glorious vistas out over False Bay and the countryside surrounding the beautifully designed building.
You have to stand there for a few few minutes to adjust, and take it all in.
A glass of their delicious wine helps, and [...]

Bean There on Wale St. Cape Town is the latest coffee emporium to open.
It’s a great addition to the coffee scene. The original branch is in Joburg.
The interior is relaxing and open plan; white with touches of turquoise and lime green dot the shop.
The coffees they sell are only African, and all are fair-trade. They [...]

Every time I eat Chef Bjorn Dingeman’s food at Holden Manz I am more and more impressed.
It’s about a year since he took up the reins as Head Chef. His previous stints have included, amongst other places, time at Babington House in Somerset in the UK.
I had lunch there the other day and I really [...]

The food at the South China Dim Sum Bar is inspired by South East Asian street-food.
Wontons, pot stickers, noodle dishes, steamed buns, and a small dish of braised beef short rib graced a small but perfectly formed menu that I tried out.
Owners Edmund Hung and Clinton Ho-Wing are Chinese South African’s who hail from Johannesburg.
They [...]

“Small plates of global dishes” is what’s on offer at Luke Dale-Roberts newly opened Pot Luck Club and Gallery in The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock.
It’s right beside The Test Kitchen, and at first appearance it shares many of the same signature design elements. Everything is very earthy and elemental – lots of blonde wood, [...]

Charles Back needs to write a book about becoming a success in the Western Cape
food and wine industry.
We all then need to read it, carefully, from cover to cover.
He has shown how, through clever brand and product development,
you can build world beating wine brands (the Goats do Roam range
has been the top selling South African [...]

Luke Dale-Robert’s latest venture is The Pot Luck Club & Gallery, a tapas bar and art gallery, which is situated adjacent to his award winning restaurant, The Test Kitchen, at The Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town.
There will also be a dedicated cocktail bar and an accompanying list of boutique wines to complement the food.
Diners [...]

Lyndall Maunder, who has just opened Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room on Bree Street, has quite a track record.
She trained with David Higgs in Meerendal, and subsequently worked with George Jardine when Jardine’s was open on Bree Street. In between opening Clarke’s she has done some private cheffing and has more recently worked at Superette [...]

Noordhoek is one of my favourite suburbs in Cape Town.
There’s the fantastic beach where you can walk for miles. It’s usually almost deserted, which I find amazing, as it’s so close to Cape Town.
Close by you’ll find the Noordhoek Farm Village, which is a huddle of little retail and food outlets built around a grassy [...]

The southern burbs are in a high sense of anticipation as Societi Bistro in Gardens opens its sister act, Societi Brasserie, in Tokai.
Through clever use of materials and floor coverings a long narrow shell of a room has been transformed into a warm welcoming space that exudes comfort while hinting at the delights that might [...]

Stanford is a hidden gem. The streets are tree lined and shady. Pretty houses,
surrounded by lawns and flower beds, run down to the Bot River.
On a side street you’ll find an unassuming little cottage named Owl’s Barn, and it’s in here that
Mariana Esterhuizen and her pony tailed husband Peter run a kitchen and restaurant with
such [...]

Do one thing and do it well.
Who said that?
I did actually, and it’s the thought that came to mind when I visited a new place in Camps Bay called The Mussel Bar.
With input from Bertus Basson it’s a little place that serves……..and there’s a hint in the name; mussels.
To be more precise; big fat, chubby, [...]

Grabbing a bite to eat at Willoughby & Co. in the V&A has always been a bit of a ritual for me, usually after a movie or some shopping.
So to discover that they are breaking the law, and are brazenly open about it, came as a shock.
Here’s what happened.
A bottle of Kikkoman Sauce (red top) was [...]

Harbour House Restaurant has opened at the V&A Waterfront.
That’s great news, as I believe they now take the mantle of the best restaurant on the Waterfront. I ate there yesterday and not only did I enjoy the physical and aesthetic beauty of the new venue (think lots of bleached wood and glass), but the food [...]

The 12 Apostles Hotel is the kind of place that you need to remind yourself about, and that it is well worth a visit.
It’s a destination venue – situated, as it is, well beyond the hustle and bustle of Camps Bay and tucked high up on the slopes of the 12 Apostles mountains.
And a destination [...]

I’ve known Russel Wasserfall and Camilla Comins for a couple of years now.
He takes stunning photographs and writes beautifully about all matters food. He has also produced some wonderful cookery books and I first met him through his work on “Bloke”,a cookery book written by his brother-in-law, Jason Comins, which celebrates blokey ways to make [...]

Celebrations galore last night to mark a 4oth birthday. A creation born in 1971.
Kaapse Vonkel, SA’s first MCC first saw the light of day in 1971 when Frans Malan introduced his bubbles to South Africans.
It was only R3 a bottle then.
A lot of things were different then.
The Hillbrow Tower in Johannesburg was completed, as were the [...]

Jonathan Heath’s cooking is some of the best Thai/Asian cooking I have tasted outside of my travels in Asia.
Of all the Asian countries I have travelled in, I have spent the most time in Thailand, and learned to love their cuisine with its use of fresh ingredients and gifted use of spices and flavours that [...]

Located on Waterkant Street, a few doors up from Hemelhuijs, is the best fish and chip shop in Cape Town.
You won’t find the hipsters or blogger types here, because it’s not that sort of place.
Lusitania Fisheries just do fish and chips. The chips are made from freshly hand cut potatoes, and the fish is as [...]
