This is the ultimate Too Tired to Cook choice for anyone who is too busy or too tired to rustle up a tasty nourishing meal on a winter’s evening.
I came across Richard Chamberlain on the recommendation of a friend and visited his kitchens in Mowbray.
A reassuring aroma of delicious home cooking smells assailed my nostrils as I went up the driveway to his house.
Inside, his kitchen was a hive of activity, with chefs chopping, mixing, stirring and tasting.
Richard is a caterer, and does all the usual events that you might expect; everything from weddings to corporate events to small dinner parties.
But he does one other thing, and that thing is that he delivers proper delicious home cooked meals directly to your house.
They come in foil containers, and you can freeze them and use them as you need them. Each container is good for two hearty meals, and he also does soups.
No soup is tastier than a homemade soup, and the one I tasted, a pea and ham soup, had me in raptures.
Wandering through his kitchen I watched as dishes were being prepared the old fashioned way. No prepacked sauces or mixes from the catering supply companies. Everything was prepared fresh, from the best of ingredients. A huge pot of sauce for the Coq au Vin was bubbling
merrily on the stove.
Richard cooks everything in batches (keeps the cost down). So on a given week certain dishes only will be available.
Soups this and last week included Vegetable, Minestrone, Chicken, Leek and Potato, Tomato and Basil and Moroccan Chickpea and Lentil.
Main courses were Coq au Vin, Ostrich Bobotie, Butternut and Spinach Lasagne, Duck and Anchovy Sauce, Cape Malay Chicken Curry and Hungarian Goulash.
These are pretty substantial meals, and two people would need to work at a serving (the serving sizes are for two people).
The way it works is that you place a minimum order. This costs R580.
For this you get 4 soups and 4 main courses for two. In other words 8 meals. This works out at R78 for the starter and main course.
That’s pretty good value. Now if you want anything extra like noodles with your goulash or rice with your curry you’ll have to cook that up yourself. But that’s not too difficult? Is it?
Most of the meals are so substantial that you won’t need anything extra. Just look at the Coq au Vin picture, what you see there was a meal in itself.
Out of this planet catering.
