Franck Dangereux’s wicked chicken.

Wicked chicken from Franck Dangereux.

It’s Sunday. You’ve just had a long walk on Noordhoek Beach (one of the world’s most beautiful) and you are wending your way home. You are too tired to cook, or you just couldn’t be bothered.

Solution? Call in to the deli and bakery at the Foodbarn and buy one of their delicious roasted chickens. At R65, one will feed a family, and it will come with potatoes in oils and juices.

My other tip is to order it early, before you get onto the beach. Caroline is the girl to ask for, and she’ll keep one aside that you can collect on the way back. Do this as they sell out by 12pm.

I serve it with mixed green salad and some crusty bread. A glass of white wine helps the overall experience.

A few weeks ago I mentioned Franck’s chickens to a friend who is a top communications consultant in Cape Town. She implored me not to tell anyone about them, as they were her secret. Being too busy to cook she regularly serves them up as her own!

  1. The Food Barn Deli is one of our favourite places to get great home bakes and other delicious treats, but I was not aware that one could order a roast chicken. We will be sure to recommend this to the guests in our self-catering cottages as an affordable luxury meal option.

    Dennis,
After a long walk on Noordhoek Beach, followed by brunch in Cafe Roux, there’s no better way to have an evening meal than to come home with one of his roasted chickens, some goodies from the deli, and a couple of bottles of wine (the only place I know of to buy wine on a Sunday). It’s my perfect Sunday.
