Easter Egg Taste Test.

Easter Eggs Easter Egg Taste Test.

Chocolate Easter Eggs and bunnies.

I never thought I’d say this, but I’ve tasted enough chocolate today to last a lifetime. What’s worse is that our Taste Buddies numbered a few kids in the room, and there were lots of disagreements over what constituted good chocolate.

Eggs and bunnies were tasted, and every product was made from milk chocolate.

The eggs and chocolates we tasted were;

Beacon Bunny, 150G. Large chocolate rabbit. R23.95. Thick shell but not sweet enough.

Pick n’Pay, 250G assorted egg sizes. Foodbarn filled with eggs. R41.95. Too sweet, no chocolate taste.

Woolworths Hollow Egg. 70G. R12.95. Good shell thickness, pleasing chocolate taste.

Lindt. Tin egg, containing chocolate ganache balls.  62G. R57,99. Bit of a rip off. 5 chocolates in tin. Normally it’s R14.95 for 3.

Pick n’Pay Rabbit. 145G. R29.99. Perfect shell thickness. Sweet and low chocolate taste.

Beacon Mini Eggs. 114G. R26.95. Sweet, paper thin.

Woolworths Belgian Chocolate Bunny. 200G. R44.95. Good shell thickness. Very sweet.

Woolworths Belgian Egg. 160G. R79.95. Subtle chocolate flavour mingled with acceptable sweetness.

Beacon Big Eggs. 125G. A large hollow egg and 4 hollow balls. R 24.95. Good value fun egg with 4 additional small eggs.

Run rabbit, run rabbit, run run run.........

In general, the chocolate was too sweet and the flavours were characterised by a lack of cocoa solids and an overabundance of vegetable fat. So sweet and tasteless, but the kids loved the sweetness.

My favourite was the Pick n’Pay 145G for R29.99. Made in Germany, this chocolate had a good taste delivery without cloying sweetness and fat.

The Woolworths 70G egg at R12.95, made in Namibia, scored well also.

The Lindt bunnies were the packaging winners and scored the higest on the cuteness factor. Kids and adults were attracted by the gold foil and a large version an adult brought had the wow factor of a little collar and bell. Shame!

It will be a year before I have to taste such a collection of chocolate again. I am not shedding too many tears.
