Tour de France at Societi Bistro, Orange Street.

A Cape Town Winter; rain and wind gusting off the mountain. Dark mornings, short days, hibernating Capetonians. No one wants to go out, the restaurants are freezing, not set up for Winter at all.
Throw another log on the fire, slide further under the duvet and see if there is anything decent on the TV, now [...]

Josephine’s Cookhouse, Newlands.

Brought to you by the talented restaurateurs behind Societi Bistro on Orange Street and Societi Brasserie in Tokai, Josephine’s Cookhouse is newly opened in the historic Josephine’s Mill building, beside SAB Brewery.
The owners have tidied up the old venue, which was operated by Caveau, and made it warmer and more welcoming with new flooring and [...]

3 Excellent reasons to visit Societi Bistro.

Actually, there are more than three reasons to visit Societi Bistro.
There’s the Snug Bar, with its roaring log fireplace, professional staff, a great winelist and a menu that changes with the seasons. Then there’s Stefan Marais, Societi Bistro’s gifted chef who has just returned from holidays.
Ask him where he went and he’ll reply innocently that [...]

Societi Bistro – Autumn Menu.

Chef Stefan Marais works his magic this Autumn with his new menu of dishes designed to reflect the best of produce sourced from local producers committed to ethical practices. He uses top quality ingredients from small producers and creates earthy dishes which deliver on looks and taste.
What I love about Stefan’s approach is that he just [...]

Recipe – Slow braised ox tongue, from Stefan Marais, Societi Bistro.

Slow Braised Ox Tongue in a Parsley and Caper sauce with Dauphine potatoes
Now before you look at the list of ingredients and the amount of instructions below and run for the hills, you need to realise one thing.  This recipe is AWESOME (sheesh, excuse me…if I may say so myself! ) and will totally be [...]

Chef’s Recipe. Stefan Marais of Societi Bistro makes Watermelon Salad with Goats Cheese and Vodka Mint Dressing.

Chef Marais says; “This is one of my favourite little dishes round this time of year, it just epitomises summer for me.  It is on our summer menu at Societi Bistro.  The flavours are simple, fresh, bold and it is so easy to make.  The creamy Goats cheese works very well with the fresh crisp [...]

Cold Gazpacho Soup and Watermelon, Feta and Mint Salad.

In this hot weather here are two dishes which are easy and fast to make and will definitely cool you down. Mix the ingredients in the gazpacho to your own taste.

My 10 best foodie moments of 2010.

The memorable moments of 2010 have been done in alphabetical order – all the
experiences were special in their own way.

1. BIZERCA,Granny Smith apple sorbet, with Calvados. Guaranteed to titillate
the most jaded of tastebuds.
2. CRISTOPHE’S,Stellenbosch. His pork casserole, on a windy winters day, was French
bistro cooking at its best.
3. GAAITJIE in Paternoster – idyllic location, wonderful food, memorable staff,
and Suzi [...]

Review, Sotano, Mouille Point.

“If you’re fond of sand dunes and salt sea air……….”  The notes of this song song swam through my mind as I ate at Sotano.
The experience is a combination of the interior design (White, light woods, clean lines) and the view of blue sky and sea, which is across the road from the entrance.
Experienced restaurateur, Brendon [...]

Societi Bistro, Gardens.

Cape Town restaurants aren’t really suited to Winter.
Summer is their thing.
Warm weather, blue skies, spectacular views and streetscapes mean that open spaces, alfresco dining and starry skies are the backdrop to some of the best dining experiences in the Cape.
But come Autumn and Winter a metamorphose occurs. What were once airy breezy restaurants become cold [...]
