Help at last – the washable keyboard.

We’ve all been there, happily nibbling on a biscuit and downing a mug of your finest Jamacian Blue Mountain, when suddenly…the phone rings, you reach over, hit the mug of coffee and over it goes, all over the keyboard…..
Or the baby vomit projectiles on it, or you spill a glass of wine. That’s what I [...]

Beef and Oyster Pie from Chris Erasmus, Pierneef à La Motte

Autumn has arrived with the rustle of fallen leaves, crisp mornings, chilly nights and crackling log fires. It’s time for hearty red wines and tasty food which will keep out the chills. Chris Erasmus demonstrates his Beef and Oyster Pie, a recipe from the 1500’s.
Guaranteed to stick to your ribs, a couple of these paired [...]

Darling Cellars Shiraz, 2008 Reserve.

What I like about Woolworths wines is that they do all the hard work in picking the wine for you. The selection may be smaller than you’d be used to, but it is, as they say, perfectly formed.
In short, it would be hard to leave Woolworths with an ill chosen or bad bottle.
The brain and palate [...]

Alphabetical – a red wine blend.

From the guys who brought you Hedonist, comes their latest wine creation.
It’s a 2008 blend of red wines.
First impressions is that the packaging and label is attractive, and screams “Look, a lot of thought went into everything about this wine, and it’s good, or at least we think so, and for R75 a bottle it’s [...]

Wines of the Week. Balance Chardonnay and Shiraz from Overhex.

Overhex is one of those producers you vaguely know about, know that you should know more, and are then surprised at what you find out when you do get to know them.
They export 12 million litres a year, and no surprise that they are making their brands known to South Africans as the Rand has become [...]

Bernard Veller of Nitida. He gave me the chance to come to Nitida 4 years ago and has taught me about every aspect of the business – from how to run the farm, the business, the vines and also how to make great wine.

Winemaker Interview – J.D. Pretorius, Steenberg Vineyards.

What has been the biggest influence on your winemaking?
The biggest influence on me to date have been the people I’ve worked with. I’ve had great mentors – John Loubser, the Cellarmaster here, and Erika Ubermeyer at Graham Beck in Franschhoek.
What excites you currently about the wine industry?
There is continual experimentation with lighter, more elegant, lightly [...]

6 Great value wines from Mike Bampfield-Duggan.

Mike Bampfield-Duggan is the owner of Wine Concepts in Newlands and on Kloof Street in Town. I have great time for him as he’s a nice fellow and he has a great nose for truffling out a great bargain. That is not the same as a cheap wine. Bargain wine is a wine that normally costs a heck of a lot more for the equivalent drinking experience..
