Top trends for 2012.

It’s that time of year to get the crystal ball out and polish it off to see what might lie in store for South African restaurants and diners during 2012.
These are turbulent times, with increasing uncertainty at every level, nationally and internationally. Recession, the credit squeeze and anti drink-driving campaigns are affecting dining out in [...]

The Pot Luck Club and Gallery.

“Small plates of global dishes” is what’s on offer at Luke Dale-Roberts newly opened Pot Luck Club and Gallery in The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock.
It’s right beside The Test Kitchen, and at first appearance it shares many of the same signature design elements. Everything is very earthy and elemental – lots of blonde wood, [...]

Christmas and Luke Dale-Roberts – all wrapped up.

One of my favourite chefs, Luke Dale-Roberts, is coming round for Christmas.

Well, not literally, but the next best thing, his food, is.
That’s because he has created a Christmas range for Woolworths – chutneys, relishes, dressings, pestos; lamb, salmon & sausage, gammon belly, pudding and so on.
Now this is the kind of thing I love – supermarkets [...]

Luke Dale-Roberts – his next move, is not to move.

July 28th.
Luke has changed his mind.
He says; “After careful consideration I have decided to not to pursue a new restaurant opening in the southern suburbs later this year. I am keen to keep my eye on the ball and I have decided to focus completely on the Test Kitchen in the Biscuit Mill for the [...]

At the High Altar in the Test Kitchen.

If there is a Holy Trinity it was represented yesterday in The Test Kitchen by Eben Sadie and his wines, Adi Badenhorst and his, and finally Luke Dale-Roberts who linked all three into a food and wine experience that has to be one of the best available, anywhere.

At R850 for 8 courses of food and wine [...]

The courses will run in the newly opened Wine at the Mill premises, which are located in the Biscuit Mill opposite Luke Dale Roberts Test Kitchen.
The classes will be, Cathy tells me, informal, enjoyable and aimed at enthusiastic [...]

House and Leisure – Food.

I like it when a publication that I know well steps outside of the box and does something unusual and different.
I associate House and Leisure with being an interior and lifestyle magazine – and usually get my fix of the best South Africa has to offer via its beautifully styled, well written and presented pages.
They [...]

Review, The Test Kitchen, Luke Dale Roberts.

But here goes; Semi cured Franschhoek trout fillet, liquorice braised beetroot, fennel, lime pure and fromage blanc.  Simple, earthy, exquisite.
Cold beetroot, mousse green apple, lime zest, puff pastry [...]
