Lara O’Sullivan’s Table 13 in GreenPoint has been packing them in for breakfast and lunches.

Standard breakfasts around Cape Town have become so samey that it seems that everyone is serving up food from the same kitchen, prepared by the same chefs.

Not in Table 13, where you can enjoy pan fried potatoes and creamed leeks with your scrambled eggs. Or how about smoked haddock on toasted seed bread? My favourite is pan fried chicken livers, caramelised onions and scrambled egg on toasted Turkish bread. What a way to start the day.

Lara would know about getting a good start to the day. She sailed around the world a few times and was responsible for cooking for teams of hungry men on board performance racing yachts.. There’s no messing around when it comes to that kind of food. It must be tasty, nutritious and well prepared.

The emphasis on freshness and good tasting food continues in to the lunch menu, which can be found mainly on the blackboard as specials. Coriander fishcakes with fennel, spring onion and horseradish potato salad looked great. My recent favourite was the miso ginger salmon with cabbage, rosti and grilled vegetables.

Lara does not do dinners yet, despite many requests. She will open for groups by special arrangement. I think she is so right to concentrate, and not to spread herself too thin. She’s great at what she does.

Clare – I love your website and religiously read it at least a couple of times a week. Spookily, I was on the internet today looking at possible breakfast venues for my next trip to Cape Town, when we will be staying in de Waterkant and I wrote down Table 13 and here it is on your website. Looks like it is a definite now for breakfast. Is it easy to find?
    thanks

Clare, it’s one of my favourite spots as well, and I for one am so glad you highlight the ubiquitous Cape Town breakfast offering as well: I hate eggs for breakfast, and notice that nowadays a perfunctory grilled halloumi is presented as sop to those who cannot face fatty morning meals…I absolutely yearn for some really good mushrooms on decent toast somewhere, or yummy yeasty brioche with good single flower organic local honey and seriously good cafe au lait.

I really enjoy your blog. It is refreshing to read.

Table 13 is fantastic! Lara catered at my son’s wedding in March. Michael and Sarah know her from working on yachts and she was the only one they considered when planning their special day.
