Pizza oven 300x225 Review,Borrusos Rondebosch. Go for the pizza, not the pasta.

The pizza oven at Borusso's.

Borruso’s on Campground Road, Rondebosch, is one of those institutions that feels as if it’s been around for ever. (1994 actually).

It’s a family place, where on a busy weekend night you’ll see loud groups of family and friends tucking into pizzas with gusto.

To sum up my experience, you go here for the pizza, not the pasta.

I ate there recently, part of a large group of two families and friends. They were so packed (it’s walk in only) that we had to sit on a wooden bench on the terrace. The heaters were on so we were bathed in a ghostly red glow, that was atmospheric!

We snacked on the foccacia bread (pizza bread with garlic and herbs) which was delicious. We had to order two lots.

Pizza glory wall 225x300 Review,Borrusos Rondebosch. Go for the pizza, not the pasta.

The Glory Wall. On May 21st, 2010, these guys produced 356 Pizzas. Epic stuff.

The pizzas arrived. They were great. The base wasn’t soggy and they had been done to perfection in the big wood fired oven.

I had a look at the guys at work at the oven. Very impressive. They were rolling fresh pastry, doing the toppings and baking pizzas. I counted between 6 and 10 pizzas in the oven at any one time. It was an epic procedure to watch. The two guys (one making, the other baking) worked together in a slick practiced fashion. They looked as if they have been training for years.

The pasta was a disgrace. Soggy and overcooked, the sauces slurped around with water having separated from them. They looked as if they had been sneezed onto the plate. The two diners who ordered them took a few forkfuls and abandoned them, helping themselves to everyone else’s pizza.

So that’s it; informal, fun, friendly, decent enough service when busy and pretty good pizzas. What more do you want?

Mmmm love Borruso’s! I have a similar problem with Col’Cacchio which I think is massively overrated. Their pizzas are nice enough (although there are certainly better options in Cape Town) but their pasta is just diabolical. Is it really so hard to get right?

The Pizzas are the best and we are regulars. Cant say I have tried the pasta but certaintly wont after reading this especially as a lot of folk are “sneezing” right now! Corkage is fair at R15.00 as wine list is boring!

I totally agree with you Clare. I go there all the time with the family and their pasta never came up to scratch. They boys on the Pizza Oven really know their stuff though!

There is a smell in the alleyway behind which is not nice, you get it when using the loo. I think they need to look at their drains.

Agree about the pasta. Pizzas are great, and I recommend the takeaways way ahead of and of the delivery companies (Debonairs, Butlers, St.Elmo’s etc)

  6. I agree about the fab pizzas. Best for me though is that they’re still ready to take orders at 10pm on a Tuesday night which is when I get there.
Wish they’d have better choice of sugar-free drinks though.

But Claire, have you been to the ‘original’ Borruso’s in Kenilworth?
In its price bracket still one of the best pizza joints in the city , and a welcome that’s a little like walking into ‘Cheers’.
But you’re right, there too the pastas definitely come a long way behind the great pizza. And besides, when you can buy such lovely pasta from Danilo’s why bother having it at a spot with a wood-burning oven!

The Pizzas are fantastic and the Lasagnes, I think, are amazing. I’ve been going there for years and just to clarify Richard, Borruso’s in Rondebosch is “The Original”. Kenilworth opened up 3 years after the Rondebosch shop did.

Pizza’s definately best in town at either restaurant, interestingly Kenilworth is a little cheaper, but both are packed over the weekends
