On a return trip to Cape Town we stopped in Paarl for lunch. Consulting our trusty Rossouw’s Guide we decided that Marc’s was the place for us.
We opted for a table on the terrace as the thermometer was tipping toward 30 degrees. And we had the dog with us.
We were in the mood for exactly what Marc’s offered. Casual, freshly cooked Mediterranean cuisine. Mezzes, pizzas, salads, pasta, fish, steak and burgers.
We had mezzes to start. Mixed petit mezzes scooped into warm pitta bread took the edge off our hunger. They were so good we ordered a second portion.
Where’s the dog gone? Down a bloody great hole she has dug in the flower bed. The other diners are laughing at her. She obviously has a mole in her sights.
The pizzas arrived. Delicious looking they delivered on taste. Crispy bases provided the perfectly textured crunchy foil for the toppings. My focaccia caprese was perfect, washed down with a crisp glass of semillon. My partners tutto bene ( Italian sausage with mozarella, mushroom and bacon) was delicious with a cold beer.
The service was timely and cheerful.
Nande Versnel is the excutive chef in Marc’s. She is a refreshing blend of passion, enthusiasm and openess. She has fairly and squarely set her sights on getting Marc’s in the rankings as
one of the best restaurants in Paarl. She believes in fresh ingredients and food prepared from scratch. I think she’ll get there.
As we left we apologised for the dog’s shenanigans, but Nande laughed it off, as her mother is the gardener and would sort it out.
