Cabaret and decent niblets at the Theatre on the Bay.

Niblets in the foyer at Cabaret. The only drawback about an evening at the theatre is the mad scramble to eat before a play or a show. You rush your meal and then hotfoot it to the venue, and spend the rest of the evening worrying about the drink at the interval, and where the loos are.

Well no longer.  That’s one of the reasons Theatre on the Bay is one of my favourite little theatres. Walking in the front door you immediately notice that there are two large bars, one on the left, and one on the……… right. Well done, it’s not “behind you”.

Even better is a selection of decent tapas and sushi style food served by Dish, of Andrea Foulkes fame. She also runs the full a la carte restaurant Side Dish, upstairs. But if you don’t have the time or the appetite to sit in the restaurant you can eat in the lobby.

The food  is served to you in the lobby before a show, and you can have dessert at the interval.

The menu for summer is as follows; Sushi, Tomato & Parmesan soup; will move to gazpacho in summer & other offerings. Slow roasted beef pot pie, creamy tandoori chicken wraps. Macarons, Choc brownies, Almond slice and Truth coffee.

The food ranges in prices from R5 for a macaron to R20 for a wrap or R50 for 6 pieces of sushi

The wines are excellently priced at between R24-R40 (red, white, rose) and bubbly is R33 per glass.

Cabaret is at Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay from 14 August until 6 October 2012 with performances Tuesdays to Fridays at 8pm, on Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm and on Sundays at 2pm and 6pm.

It’s a wonderful production, as good as any you’ll see anywhere in the world.
