100 Women 100 Wines – results.

100w100w group 300x200 100 Women 100 Wines results.

Our group of judges, for the day, on Saturday, at the V&A.

The inaugural event of 100Women 100Wines took place this weekend in the V&A Hotel on Cape Town’s Waterfront.

100 women waded through about 150 wines and produced a final list of 100 wines that represented their favourite 100 South African wines.

It was a simple enough task, sniff, swirl and drink, just like in real life.

Gwen Job from Distell was on hand over lunch to brief the group on some of the finer aspects of wine appreciation. She kept it beautifully short, sweet and understandable.

After lunch it was down to the task in hand.

The wines were divided by drinking occasion – a tongue in cheek look at the lifestyles of the female wine drinker in South Africa.

This meant that we had categories like Braai Drinking (sunny day outdoor drinking wine to go with braai cuisine). We also had Long lunch wines (good for a long lunch, gossip and girlfriends) and Celebration (lots of bubbly here).

Baby it’s Cold Outside (winter warmers), Mid Week Easy Drinking, and Girls Night Out and Posh Present wines also featured.

Our 100 women got the concept immediately. This is how they drink. They never go to Checkers or Pick n’Pay looking for a nice Chenin, or a gluggable Cabernet. They think about the occasion – (braai for the neighbours) and buy the wine to match.

Fun and accessibility characterised the afternoon. It contrasted sharply with the numerous wine tastings I have witnessed with serious people hunched over score sheets having deep thoughts about malolactic fermentation and such like.

Anyway, here are the results. Divided alphabetically by category.
