A new breed of strawberries could be on the way to South African supermarkets in a few months. Discovered growing wild in South America, and rescued from near extinction by Dutch farmers, they have just been launched for sale in UK supermarket chain Waitrose.
Smaller in size from their red cousins, they have an albino appearance, with the shape and texture of regular strawberries The smell and taste is of Pineapples. When you slice them open they are red inside.
I’ll bet you didn’t know this, but strawberries are the only fruit with the seeds on the outside. Woolworths haven’t told me if they will be the first to carry them, but as soon as I hear I’ll let you know.
Waitrose are selling them for Stg 2.99 a punnet.
I can’t wait……a taste of pineapple. I’ll bet they’ll go a treat in a glass of sparkling wine.

Would I be an April Fool to ask you to let me know when they’re available?
No John, this is not an April Fools joke. At the time of writing we don’t know who will be bringing them in to South Africa, or even if they will be grown here by enterprising South African farmers. But we’ll keep our ear to the ground for you. I have put the feelers out on the possibility of airfreighting some down for a taste test, so let’s wait and see. If they are to be grown here the first crop should be ready in August or September. Isn’t it a great story though?
A cute story indeed
