I’ve always been a fan of Harbour House. First, their Kalk Bay restaurant, with the waves crashing on the rocks underneath and seals frolicking in the waters. The fresh fish always kept me coming back.
I was very happy to hear of their opening in the V&A, and it’s another great venue. A beautifully designed structure encompasses eco and sustainable design ethics (the wooden beams are alien gumtree, all the decking is made from recycled timber).Warm natural woods, oak floorboards, mussel shell plastered walls and beautiful lighting give the interior design a wonderful finish.
The restaurant overlooks a working harbour, and it is quite a spectacle to see the tugboats and leisure craft coming and going. A sundowner on the deck has to be one of the great Cape Town ways of ending the day.
The fish, which is the main reason to visit, is guaranteed to be as fresh as possible. There is no other way to properly eat fish. So many restaurants spoof on the so called “freshness” of their fish.

May until October, a Special Winter Menu has been introduced, showcasing the restaurant’s excellent offering with superb value for quality.
The menu will change frequently with a choice of three starter dishes, three main courses and two desserts. Signature dishes are line fish such as Yellowtail with an orange beurre blanc sauce, blanched spinach, potato, sage & artichokes; Yellowfin Tuna with garlic mashed potato, fine green beans, rocket, poached egg, Japanese Mayo & salsa verde, & Kingklip with a basil cream sauce, roast Mediterranean style vegetables & rosemary baked potato.
Each Harbour House has its own bakery, preparing its own fresh bread daily.
Harbour House is a member of the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) & is eco conscious, recycling its glass, cardboard and plastic.
I’ll also add the Harbour House in the V&A has a flippin’ great fireplace, and the last time I was there it roared like a furnace, keeping us all toasty and warm.
