Michael Olivier - Cape food and wine fundi.

If I were to go to a food and wine workshop I couldn’t think of a better one than one involving Michael Olivier.

Why?

He knows a heck of a lot about wine, and even more about food. He ran three restaurants in the Western Cape ( top 10 included ), consults with Pick n Pay on wine retailing, broadcasts about wine on Classic Fm, writes about wine, has gone digital about wine (check out crushmag-online.com) and, whew!  getting exhausted now, broadcasts twice a week as guest cook on the Expresso Breakfast TV show.

Michael has teamed up with Sue Barber, a trained cordon bleu chef (Silwood) and top end caterer. Sue has previously owned a cooking school in George and Chardonnay restaurant in Hout Bay.

Their idea is Culinary Concepts, which aims to offer a variety of courses including one off seasonal classes for Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring, Christmas and Easter. They will also cover such topics as baking, casseroling and barbecuing.

Chef Sue Barber.

The first workshop is coming up on Saturdays June 23rd and 30th, and will take place at the Miele Studio in Tygervalley.

Ideas for winter menus will be explored and you’ll get recipes for new dishes and two complete dinner parties.

At each workshop Michael will prepare 4 new dishes, and Sue will do 4 as well. Perfect for Capetonians who do not like to venture outside during the colder months.

Sip wine as you learn new things, and you’ll also get a goodie bag to take with you as you leave.

The workshops cost R375, and include the goodie bag and the wine tasting.

Look out for further workshops in the coming months which will be held in town and at the Silwood Cookery School.
