My Franschhoek Affair.

The Franschhoek Valley.

It’s all about hands on experiences. Turn flour into bread , cream into butter, milk into cream, wine and food pairings galore and how about some  bubbles, charcuterie and chocolate?  Oh, yes please.

It’s a Franschhoek Affair, and it takes place next weekend on June 25th,26th and 27th.

There’s a huge amount of activity taking place over the whole weekend.

What about trying your hand at some glass slumping with David Walters?  pasta making at Allora? sushi courses at Allee Bleue? the art of chocolate at Dieu Donne? and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Le Quartier Francais.

My taste buds have been tickled by the following classes taking place at Le Quartier Francais, a centre of epicurean delights.

They’ve got a ‘Back to Basics’ class running on Saturday morning from 10:00 – 15.00. It involves making bread, cream and cheese.  I have to say this is the one for me. The cost is 895 Rand.

More ‘Bread Making’ with Tina Jewell, on Saturday from 9.30-12.00 including wine tasting and lunch. This event takes place at Bread and Wine at the Moreson wine farm. The cost 770 Rand

Bubbles, Charcuterie and Chocolate. This is a gourmet trail starting off at the Glenwood Wine Farm. It involves tasting from the bottle and the barrel.

Move on down the valley to the  Moreson Wine Farm. Here Neil Jewel, who has just clinched the title for making the Best Pizza in South Africa, will be your guide. He’ll be joined by award winning young wine marker Clayton Reabouw, the Moreson winemaker. Both will  lead you through a journey of wines and cured meats. Finally return to the village and at Huguenot Chocolate, indulge learn and taste chocolate.  Cost 895 Rand.

Lots of restaurants are running wine and food pairings for the weekend. The ultimate one is taking place at The Tasting Room, where Margot Janse  has conjured up some divine pairings between her food and wines from the valley, working her usual magic.

And what about staying overnight? Luckily there are lots of lovely places to stay in and around the town. Le Quarter Francais have special deals for the weekend. One nights accommodation is  895 Rand per person. For such decadent luxury it’s very tempting.
