The Delicious Hotel, in Franschhoek, which opened its doors on 1st December 2011, is set to change the face of South African hospitality.
Conceptualised and designed by the all-woman team behind the world-renowned Le Quartier Français, Delicious unpacks the traditional hotel offering, giving the guest everything they need without the additional wallet-lightening add-ons.
Although Delicious is new [...]

Recession? What recession?
The latest Scotch Whisky Association sales figures for 2011 make for sobering reading.
People all over the world are drinking more and more of the ‘auld crathur. Young or old, South American and Asian, American and European.
This must all be good news for the British Tax Man. Do the Scots think they will achieve [...]

A new sushi outlet!
Who needs another new sushi restaurant? Cape Town is bulging at the waist with sushi, everyone and his mother is doing sushi. Even hard core steak houses offer sushi.
Well here’s the thing.
I need a new sushi shop/restaurant/delicatessen. Why? Because it’s close to where I live and convenience is king, is it not?
Selfish [...]

The idea of recreating the last evening on the Titanic appealed instantly to me.
The 1st class menu was the last meal the likes of Benjamin Guggenheim and John Jacob Astor ate before drowning in the freezing waters of the North Atlantic nearly 100 years ago.
The plan is to hold it in the Nellie (where else?) [...]

What a great idea!
Take Spain’s national dish and organise a competition to see who makes the best one.
I was asked to be a judge, along with some Spaniards living in Cape Town and Brent Meersman of the Mail and Guardian.
The event was the brainchild of ebullient Spanish Consul General, Ignacio Garcia-Valdecasas, and he turned the [...]

A welcome breeze of fresh Californian thinking has blown through the doors of Mulderbosch wine estate in Stellenbosch.
A new winemaker (Adam Mason, 8 year veteran at Klein Constantia) and a new general manager (Chrianto Oosthuizen, nearly 20 year veteran at Neil Ellis Wines) have come on board.
Boutique luxury hotel and wine estate operators Terroir Capital [...]

In Durban, when you order Indian food, they will check if you want it “Hot”, “Hot Hot”, or “Hot Hot Hot”.
This is a good tip to remember when ordering at Nush, a newish Indian place on Plein St.
I was told that this place is about as authentic Durban Indian as you can get in Cape [...]

It’s that man again, you’d need to be up early to keep an eye on him.
Fresh from his recent resignation, after a 7 month stint, from the Radisson Blu Gautrain it seems he has cancelled his planned trip to Namibia and has now popped up in the kitchen at The Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg.
This award [...]

Tal Smith opened Sababa in Sea Point a little over a year ago and it has been a great success. The formula of clean bright interior design and freshly prepared Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine has proven a hit with locals.
You can go along and have a snack there, or take away a lunchbox of [...]

I think late summer is the best time of year for salads. Everything is on offer from mother nature – lovely berries, fruit, and baby root vegetables. Chris Erasmus of Pierneef a La Motte shows us how to make this delicious and simple salad from fruit and veggies from his own garden. More importantly, he pairs [...]

From September this year you’ll be able to trundle through the Franschhoek winelands on a trolley.
Leaving from near the Franschhoek Cellar, where the old railway station is located, you’ll travel at a sedate 18kms per hour and will be able to view the scenery and the vines as you traverse the valley.
Wouldn’t it be great [...]

Fish cakes are a fun and tasty way for the whole family to enjoy fish.
You can use a variety of fish for the filling, all SASSI approved. I like to use hake, as it’s easily available and not expensive. But I’ve also used tuna, kingklip and anglefish.
If your kids are fussy eaters you can mould [...]

I adore mussels, always have. But I’m very picky about the way I like them cooked.
In South Africa, as I understand it, an individual is allowed to pick 25 wild mussels. Outside of that you have to buy farmed.
The centre for mussel farming in South Africa is Saldanha Bay on the West coast.
The majority [...]
