Mariana’s – a jewel in the Overberg.

Stanford is a hidden gem. The streets are tree lined and shady. Pretty houses, surrounded by lawns and flower beds, run down to the Bot River.
On a side street you’ll find an unassuming little cottage named Owl’s Barn, and it’s in here that Mariana Esterhuizen and her pony tailed husband Peter run a kitchen and [...]

1/2 a cup of milk for the potato mash.
5 baby asparagus per portion.

The Mussel Bar, Camps Bay.

Do one thing and do it well.
Who said that?
I did actually, and it’s the thought that came to mind when I visited a new place in Camps Bay called The Mussel Bar.
With input from Bertus Basson it’s a little place that serves……..and there’s a hint in the name; mussels.
To be more precise; big fat, chubby, [...]

Liquid Sax at the Roundhouse.

It all just sounds idyllic.
Lounge around the beautiful grounds of the historic Roundhouse restaurant in Camps Bay, soaking in the view down the Atlantic Coast, with the backdrop of the magnificent Twelve Apostles range sweeping down the peninsula, while taking in some of the most chilled live music you can listen to.
That’s the scene this weekend at [...]

Celebrate – Tina Bester.

Tina Bester has to be one of the most creative pastry chefs I know. I saw her recently putting a rasberry cake together and her little touch of genius was to dust the berries in cocoa power. Simple, sophisticated, but oh so effective.
She has just launched her third cookbook – Celebrate, and it’s all about [...]

Willoughby’s, and what they do to the Kikkoman Soy Sauce.

Grabbing a bite to eat at Willoughby & Co. in the V&A has always been a bit of a ritual for me, usually after a movie or some shopping.
So to discover that they are breaking the law, and are brazenly open about it, came as a shock.
Here’s what happened.
A bottle of Kikkoman Sauce (red top) was [...]

Christmas and Luke Dale-Roberts – all wrapped up.

One of my favourite chefs, Luke Dale-Roberts, is coming round for Christmas.

Well, not literally, but the next best thing, his food, is.
That’s because he has created a Christmas range for Woolworths – chutneys, relishes, dressings, pestos; lamb, salmon & sausage, gammon belly, pudding and so on.
Now this is the kind of thing I love – supermarkets [...]

South Africa has one of the world’s most sustainable, ecofriendly wine growing regimes in the world.
In fact, winemakers from Australia and other wine producing countries come here to learn best practices in this area.
One of the leading producers in this area is, without a doubt, Avondale.
Their guiding ethos is “Soil is Life” – Terra Est [...]

Movies paired with food at Free World Design.

I was delighted to get a call from the people at Free World Design to ask me to chose a movie connected with food which would then be the basis for a meal prepared by Jacques Erasmus of Hemelhuijs.
The idea is as simple as it’s creative. Sundowners on the roof, followed by a movie (which I’ll introduce [...]

Top 10 competition. We have a winner!

We had a huge entry - 123 e.mails – the highest we’ve ever had for a competition.
It was a difficult task; to match our panels eventual choice of the ten best restaurants.
Nobody achieved this.
But one person got 8 out of the 10 correctly.
And that person is Michael McKenzie of McGregor and The Waterkant, Cape Town.
We congratulate him, wish [...]

A big congratulations to the 100 Places to Eat that made the Top 100 list. The reaction to the list has been extraordinarily positive.
But the judging didn’t stop there, as the panel had to go on and chose the  Top 10 Places to Eat from this list.
Last night, the Top 10 places were revealed to [...]
