100 Women 100 Wines. What a blast!

The 100 Women 100 Wines event this weekend was an overwhelming success.
I’d like to say a big thank you to our sponsors, Tops at Spar, 1Time Airline, Cape Town Tourism, V&A Hotel and Destiny Magazine, who got the ball rolling.
A big thank you to all of the above.
We are delighted and excited to announce that [...]

100 Women 100 Wines – results.

The inaugural event of 100Women 100Wines took place this weekend in the V&A Hotel on Cape Town’s Waterfront.
100 women waded through about 150 wines and produced a final list of 100 wines that represented their favourite 100 South African wines.
It was a simple enough task, sniff, swirl and drink, just like in real life.

Chicken Noodle Salad.

This is a tasty chicken recipe I tried last week when it was 27 degrees. I’d suggest waiting until the weather improves in a few days to try it out.
1 Packet of ramen noodles, broken up.
2 Tablespoons of peanut oil.
5 spring onions, chopped.
2 cups of chopped cooked chicken meat. (free range)
1 can of water chestnuts.
2 [...]

Lovely Bubbly. Simonsig wins Best Blanc de Blanc and Best Overall prize.

Double wins were the order of the day yesterday with Simonsig Cuvee Royale 2005 winning Best Blanc de Blanc and Best Overall prize at the Wine Magazine Amorim Cork Cap Classique Challenge.

A roasted biscuity taste with  fine bubbles and a hint of citrus is how I’d describe the winning wine, and the Simonsig people recommend [...]

A wine for women, from New Zealand.

Interesting to see what the Kiwi’s have come up with in a 9% ABV wine spritzer aimed at the female market.
Described as “Happiness in a Bottle”, Ritzling is a low alcohol riesling spritzer drink with a twist of citrus juice.
I like the approach. It redefines how wine is traditionally drunk and aims in a very unapologetic way [...]

The winter special. Unbeatable value at The Foodbarn, with Nitida Wines.

Any old excuse to get out to Noordhoek and eat Franck Dangereux’s food. This occasion was the launch of their winter menu.
Franck and his team are pairing their food with Nitida wines from Durbanville. Nitida, as some of you might remember, is home to the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year, RJ Botha.
The combinations are [...]

Bird’s Cafe to get new owners.

Quirky and loveable, Bird’s Cafe has been bought by the duo of Leigh Trout and Kevin Mink. Leigh previously worked in top establishments in the Seychelles and more recently in the Mont Rochelle in Franschhoek.
His partner is Kevin Mink, who is well known in the catering business in Cape Town.
Loyal customers of Birds will be [...]

Vegetables from the Post Office.

When you think about it, the South African Post Office has massive exposure via its stamps. Millions pass in front of consumers eyeballs every day.
So it’s an obvious place or way to promote something?
Completely right, and their Philatelic Division (Stamp Design Department) decided that something needed to be done to promote the consumption of vegetables [...]

Blaauklippen launch an aperitif and an 8 year old potstilled brandy.

A sensuous flavour fusion of cinnamon and Christmas spice create the backbone of this sophisticated brandy fortified aperitif.
A blend of wood matured red Noble Late Harvest and Blaauwklippen Potstill Brandy. Drink neat or on the rocks or use as an ingredient in cocktails and special food dishes.

Potstill Brandy made from Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc wines. Matured [...]

A Recipe Book – from Twitter.

Apparently over 4 million Britons go to bed each night in an undernourished state.
Yes, it is hard to believe.
A manufacturer of ovens, Belling, has come up with a plan to help these folk through the UK based Foodcycle charity. They have crowdsourced hundreds of Twitter recipes and collated them in a book which is available on e.bay.
Called Tweet [...]

There’s eggs, and there’s emu eggs.

I saw this egg and just had to have one.
I think it is just so beautiful it would be a shame to eat it.
It costs R15, and is the equivalent of 16 chickens eggs. That means you are getting the equivalent amount of egg for less than half price. The flavour is described as “creamy scrambled chicken [...]

Six scrumptious Cabernet Sauvignon’s.

Shirley Griffiths of Vino Pronto does it again this month, with a wonderful selection of Cabernet Sauvignon’s.
If you like complex berries with cedar and mint notes to wash down the lamb chops, springbok, or just sip on its own then, here’s a selection of six beauties, tasted and approved by Shirley herself.
What more recommendation could you want!
