Salads and herbs from Fleur du Cap wine.

Fleur du Cap have decided to print all their promotions on neck-tags made from seed paper. Seed paper is paper embedded with herb and flower seeds. After you buy your bottle of wine you don’t throw out the neck tag, you plant it.
In this case the neck tag is embedded with rocket and basil seeds. [...]

If you [...]

Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Rich, sweet and sticky, the way it’s meant to be – with a dollop of creme fraiche and maybe a glass of dessert wine to accompany? I can’t think of a nicer way to finish a meal.
Here’s my recipe. The trick is to make sure it is not wet and gooey in the middle when taking [...]

Bringing home the bacon, the real bacon.

Of all the meats freely available to consumers in supermarkets and butcheries, pork is one of the most problematic. Factory line production has seen to that.
Sourcing some decent, ethically reared, free range pork has really been a problem, for me anyway.
Free range pork does not contain hormones or antibiotics and the pigs have been allowed to [...]

Recipe – baked fish with coriander, ginger and garlic.

I love coriander. It always adds punch to a dish.
It’s used in a lot of South Asian cooking, stir frys, Thai curries and steamed fish. It also pops up in Mexican cooking and is used in salsa and guacamole. In Indian cooking it’s tossed, chopped, on top of dhal and curries.
It’s not a wimpy herb, it’s got [...]

Rust en Vrede – a tale of two meals.

I had expected my first meal at Rust en Vrede to be out of this world.
It is considered to be the top restaurant in South Africa by Eat Out magazine, and Rossouw’s Restaurants have given it their top award of 3 stars.
So let me tell you about my first meal there.
The venue itself is stunning. [...]

Wines of the Week. Balance Chardonnay and Shiraz from Overhex.

Overhex is one of those producers you vaguely know about, know that you should know more, and are then surprised at what you find out when you do get to know them.
They export 12 million litres a year, and no surprise that they are making their brands known to South Africans as the Rand has become [...]

Food from many Greek Kitchens. Tessa Kiros. Review.

Tessa Kiros is a fabulous writer of cookery books. They are not traditional recipe books, more cultural insights. It’s no surprise that she wins awards for her writing skills as well as her recipes.
She has the most unusual background. Born in London to a Finnish mother and a Greek Cypriot father, her family moved to South [...]

Mynhardt Joubert’s Recipe for Smoked Paprika Chicken.

This week Mynhardt Joubert of Bar Bar Black Sheep in Riebeek Kasteel shares his recipe for Smoked Paprika Chicken with us.
I made this recipe last night and I’m still drooling at the memories of it. Rich earthy flavours spring from the plate.
Needless to say a dish like this will need to be prepared with a stonker [...]

Side Dish Theatre Bistro and Fascinating Aida at Theatre on the Bay.

Before the show dinner was served at the newly revamped Side Dish Theatre Bistro.
Starters of duck salad with apple was excellent and tasty, squid with noodles was a great little dish. The squid was perfectly cooked.
Main courses were shoulder of lamb which was served with mashed potatoes which was real comfort food as the wind [...]

The Pickled Fish, Kommetjie. Review.

Newly opened, The Pickled Fish is a lovely little restaurant
Located  inside the Imhoff Farm at Kommetjie.
It’s a welcome addition to the other eateries at this farm.
The Pickled Fish does nothing but fish. I like that.
Squid, salmon carpaccio, hake, mussels, prawns, east coast sole. You get the idea.
There are tables scattered under the trees outside and [...]

Constantia Fresh, 2011.

This annual event takes place this year on February 25th and 26th.
It celebrates the Sauvignon Blanc grape, grown in the Constantia Valley, and used to make the single varietal wine. It also explores its use in blends both in South Africa and internationally.
You can go to a very posh tasting on the afternoon of the 25th which lasts [...]

Chef Marais says; “This is one of my favourite little dishes round this time of year, it just epitomises summer for me.  It is on our summer menu at Societi Bistro.  The flavours are simple, fresh, bold and it is so easy to make.  The creamy Goats cheese works very well with the fresh crisp [...]

The Restaurant at Glen Carlou.

Hennie Van Der Merwe’s revamped menu at Glen Carlou was exactly what I needed to sample during a recent visit out to the Paarl/Franschhoek area.
His cooking is down to earth, flavoursome, tasty, uncomplicated and straightforward. A member of my party described it as ‘comfort food’.
At the very least, it’s comforting to be able to recognise what’s [...]
