“Small plates of global dishes” is what’s on offer at Luke Dale-Roberts newly opened Pot Luck Club and Gallery in The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock.
It’s right beside The Test Kitchen, and at first appearance it shares many of the same signature design elements. Everything is very earthy and elemental – lots of blonde wood, [...]

Reuben Riffel
Reuben is one chef who needs no introduction, and he’ll be with his family in Franschhoek on Christmas Day.
“Every year on Christmas day my mom and mother in law cook the food.
I enjoy all the traditional South African dishes like pickled tongue but crayfish korma is always on the menu and [...]

I’ve never bought a dud bottle from Shirley in Vino Pronto, beside the Caltex garage, on Orange St. Gardens.
She has such a refreshing way of looking at wine, and her one sentence tasting notes are brilliant and to the point.
Here’s a small collection she has recommended for Christmas. Check them out.
SPECIAL OFFER FOR SPILL READERS!! [...]

Charles Back needs to write a book about becoming a success in the Western Cape food and wine industry.
We all then need to read it, carefully, from cover to cover.
He has shown how, through clever brand and product development, you can build world beating wine brands (the Goats do Roam range has been the top [...]

Lyndall Maunder, who has just opened Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room on Bree Street, has quite a track record.
She trained with David Higgs in Meerendal, and subsequently worked with George Jardine when Jardine’s was open on Bree Street. In between opening Clarke’s she has done some private cheffing and has more recently worked at Superette [...]

The amphitheatre at Paul Cluver is really a special place. It’s set into the side of a slope and is surrounded by tall gumtrees that lend a forest glade like atmosphere to the events.
The seating is wooden benches, made from locally sourced wood, and the whole setting overlooks the small stage area. There’s only seating [...]

Noordhoek is one of my favourite suburbs in Cape Town.
There’s the fantastic beach where you can walk for miles. It’s usually almost deserted, which I find amazing, as it’s so close to Cape Town.
Close by you’ll find the Noordhoek Farm Village, which is a huddle of little retail and food outlets built around a grassy [...]

Raziyah Johnston was born in Durban, raised in Ireland, and is now living in Cape Town.
So don’t be surprised when you hear her south Dublin accent when you meet her. And you will get to hear it in torrents, as Raziyah is a passionate, enthusiastic, knowledgeable advocate of all things connected with Indian food, especially [...]

Tops at Spar are the number one liquor retailer in South Africa. Not a lot of people know that and are genuinely surprised when they find out.
People who visit their outlets are attracted by the well laid out, well lit, well merchandised stores. They have a great selection of everything you might want, from premium [...]

Jenny Morris is a complete delight.
She’s warm, friendly, funny and wow, does she know about food!
So it was with immense pleasure that I got my hands on her latest cookery book. One of my favorite fruits, pomegranate, is featured on the cover, and inside the book there’s a treasure trove of recipes, ideas and inspiration.
I [...]

I asked a brandy industry person last week how come South African brandy does so well in international awards competitions and the answer was a simple one; “Because it’s good stuff and takes longer to make”.
And it turns out that SA brandy must spend a minimum of three years in a cask while Cognac can [...]

The southern burbs are in a high sense of anticipation as Societi Bistro in Gardens opens its sister act, Societi Brasserie, in Tokai.
Through clever use of materials and floor coverings a long narrow shell of a room has been transformed into a warm welcoming space that exudes comfort while hinting at the delights that might [...]

Stanford is a hidden gem. The streets are tree lined and shady. Pretty houses, surrounded by lawns and flower beds, run down to the Bot River.
On a side street you’ll find an unassuming little cottage named Owl’s Barn, and it’s in here that Mariana Esterhuizen and her pony tailed husband Peter run a kitchen and [...]

Do one thing and do it well.
Who said that?
I did actually, and it’s the thought that came to mind when I visited a new place in Camps Bay called The Mussel Bar.
With input from Bertus Basson it’s a little place that serves……..and there’s a hint in the name; mussels.
To be more precise; big fat, chubby, [...]

It all just sounds idyllic.
Lounge around the beautiful grounds of the historic Roundhouse restaurant in Camps Bay, soaking in the view down the Atlantic Coast, with the backdrop of the magnificent Twelve Apostles range sweeping down the peninsula, while taking in some of the most chilled live music you can listen to.
That’s the scene this weekend at [...]
