A new breed of strawberries could be on the way to South African supermarkets in a few months. Discovered growing wild in South America, and rescued from near extinction by Dutch farmers, they have just been launched for sale in UK supermarket chain Waitrose.
Smaller in size from their red cousins, they have an albino appearance, with [...]

The first time I ate Camil’s food was in 2002 in Residence Klein Oliphants in Franschhoek. I still remember the rack of lamb he cooked that night. It was exquisite.
Camil’s restaurant in Green Point is open about 5 months. It’s part of the Cape Royale Hotel complex.
I arrived in Camil’s for lunch on one of [...]

Where were you born?
Naarden, in The Netherlands.
How long have you been in your present job?
In September this year I will be at Le Quartier Francais for 15 years
What is your favourite dish to eat?
I love a lot of things, and it really depends on my mood, the time of year and where I am.I think South [...]

“If ye have no daughters,
Give them to your sons,
One a penny, two a penny,
Hot cross buns”
These sweet spiced buns are made with raisins and currants and leavened with yeast. The spices used are usually cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, but could also include orange zest, allspice and even ginger.
Hot cross buns are as much a part of Easter [...]

Doreen Alcock, pastry chef at The Sweetest Thing Patisserie in Simonstown was awarded the Diners Club Award in 2008 for The Most Promising Pastry Chef Newcomer in the Whole of South Africa. I’ll repeat that, The Whole of South Africa.
This chef has got to be good, I thought, and worth a trip all the way to Simonstown.
So on [...]

Jason Comins is a lucky South African. He got to study at the Ballymaloe Cookery School in County Cork, Ireland. What’s the big deal about this place? it’s simply amazing. Their philosophy is about using honest to goodness ingredients cooked to perfection not overly interfered or dickied up. The food I’ve eaten at Ballymaloe has [...]

What’s a bookseller doing opening a restaurant? Is this an act of madness? In this case, I think it’s a stroke of genius.
Ann Donald, owner of Kalk Bay Books, has opened The Annex and based on my meal last night, I would say she has hit the jackpot.
It’s a wow. Honest to goodness cooking with style [...]

Zen minimalism and a tranquil air envelop you as soon as you enter Kyoto Garden Sushi.
Cape Town is bursting at the seams with half price sushi joints (and they are packed) so why come here? Well, the chef is genuinely Japanese. Koshi Koyama hails from Tokyo, and he trained in Japan to be a sushi [...]

The Mowbray venue is not as impactful as last years Tamboerskloof location. But with the sun setting behind a cloud shrouded mountain last nights opening night did have plenty of character. It’s well organised, with lots of parking and helpful stewards to point you the right way.
There’s loads to see and do. The Pick n [...]

Mezzaluna means half moon in Italian. It is also the name given to the type of knife which consists of a curved blade with a handle on each end, and is used for chopping herbs, pizzas or pesto.
It’s also the name of Jimmy Fiore’s Trattoria, on Loop Street. Jimmy worked in banking for 25 years, [...]

Now I have a problem with baboons.
I used to be sympathetic to their cause, but now they are messing with me. They are plundering the Pinot Noir crop wholesale.
This is my favourite wine, and I won’t stand for it.
But seriously, it appears that the poor animals are resorting to foraging in the ripening vines as their [...]

In the new Cape Quarter you chance upon little jewels of shops that are hidden around corners, or tucked into funny places. Daniela’s is one of these. You are in the shop before you realise it, as it straddles one of the walkways through this centre.
Your first impression is one of an enormous impulse to [...]

It’s Sunday. You’ve just had a long walk on Noordhoek Beach (one of the world’s most beautiful) and you are wending your way home. You are too tired to cook, or you just couldn’t be bothered.
Solution? Call in to the deli and bakery at the Foodbarn and buy one of their delicious roasted chickens. At R65, one [...]

I never thought I’d say this, but I’ve tasted enough chocolate today to last a lifetime. What’s worse is that our Taste Buddies numbered a few kids in the room, and there were lots of disagreements over what constituted good chocolate.
Eggs and bunnies were tasted, and every product was made from milk chocolate.
The eggs and chocolates we tasted [...]

We decided to visit Bukhara after friends exclaimed “What do you mean the Bombay Brasserie is great?? Wait ’till you try Bukhara!” .
So with an open mind and certain expectations I trekked, on a warm Sunday night, into the CBD, near Greenmarket Square, to eat there.
Planet Bukhara was found down a dark side street. After a bit [...]

This week we tasted a selection of Merlots on sale in Woolworths. Why Merlots? and why Woolworths?
Well, it’s Autumn, and time to start thinking of full bodied reds to see us through the chilly Winter evenings. We’ll check out Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and blends in the coming weeks too.
Why Woolworths? The answer is that the [...]

Congratulations to Deborah Paterson of Tamboerskloof, and Sarah Van Leiden of Claremont who each win double tickets for the opening evening of Taste of Cape Town, on March 24th.
19 of Cape Town’s finest restaurants will offer their best dishes and delicacies for your tasting pleasure. Nothing costs more than R40 a plate. Mowbray is the [...]

Tiramisu is so easy to make, so I am amazed at the amount of bad ones that I have tasted.
My tiramisu is radical in that there are no cups of sugar added.
My feeling is that there is enough sugar already in the biscuits and liquer for it to be sweet enough already. It’s completely unnecessary to add [...]

Located at Lynn’s home and guesthouse in Fernwood, we went along last [...]

Tal Smith opened Sababa last December. It’s located in a small, but perfectly formed, shop unit upstairs in the Piazza St.John in Sea Point. She specialises in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern style take away foods.
Sababa means awesome in Hebrew. How Sababa is that!
She describes her food as healthy and wholesome, and it includes dishes such [...]
