This cookery book will make you cry.

It’s very special; a wonderful collection of memories, emotions, love letters and of course, recipes

The author is Sam Woulidge and the book is called Confessions of a Hungry Woman.

As Sam says; “When I write, I try to make sense of my world –the way I feel, what I fear, the ways in which I love. And who and what I love .My taste-buds are often my trigger”.

Her experience at the Bar Pinotxo at the Boqueria in Barcelona is brilliantly captured.

Weirdly, I have had a similar experience at the exact same spot.

Her musings on her relationship with her mother are searingly honest.

There is a great piece on discovering the Mona Liza, a greasy spoon cafe in London

Sam’s writing draws you in. When you are finished reading you are left with insights and some food for thought.  Pizza, Venice, cinnamon, oysters, pancakes, peanut butter, and fishing are just some of the topics which Sam examines in detail, all beautifully written.

Sam’s piece called My South Africa is so precise in its essence and honesty that I found it mesmerizing.

This is a deeply personal book and in parts, quite moving. It’s much more than just a recipe/cookery book.

It’s a diary, a series of histories, a travelogue, a love story, childhood memories, a recording of friendships and yes, and a selection of great recipes from her friends.

Boozy Prawns and Lemony Fennel, Pomegranate and Feta Cheese. These two winners were delivered by Johan van Zyl and Peter van Noord. Sam says her relationship with Johan and Peter is defined by laughter. You can sense this in the recipes.

A slow braised shoulder of lamb is presented by Peter and Marianna Esterhuizen of Mariana’s fame in Stanford. You just know it’s going to taste sensational.

Karen Dudley, she of The Kitchen eating spot in Woodstock, dishes up a clever broccoli recipe, it’s scrumptious. As Karen says herself; “This is what broccoli wants to be when it grows up”.

The title on the cover and spine is done in a raised orange flock finish. You just want to caress it with your finger tips to feel the texture. In a way this little delight defines the book, another lovely surprise.
